Daniel’s Story
“I Care for Others.”
Daniel volunteers twice a week at our Phoenix distribution center. His uncle works in the St. Mary’s Food Bank Transportation department, so they carpool together and arrive early in the morning. Daniel patiently waits with excitement to start his shift at 8am. He said that anyone who comes to St. Mary’s Food Bank – whether you’re a client or volunteer – gets a new start every day.
Daniel is very committed to helping the community and loves working with other volunteers and staff members who also share the same mission. “It’s my job to help people,” he said. “I care for others.”
One of his favorite parts of volunteering is pushing the carts and working alongside the National Guard. Since the beginning of the pandemic, St. Mary’s has been fortunate to receive tremendous help from 50 National Guard soldiers with packing food boxes, moving food with forklifts, getting orders ready, and assisting clients. We are so grateful to them and the outpour of volunteers who answered our call for help. Daniel proudly showed off his camouflage hat and face mask in support of the National Guard.
Those who got to know Daniel on a personal level said, “He is a hard worker and always smiling. He is so nice and a pleasure to be around. We all look forward to working with Daniel, he really cares about others.”
Selfless volunteers like Daniel are vital to the food bank and help us save millions of dollars in labor costs. Because of the continued support from volunteers, donors, and partners — we’re able to provide enough food for 250,000 meals every single day to ensure no one in our community goes hungry.
