Elexis is a devoted mom raising two young children, ages two and five. She’s been working as a caregiver for almost a decade. Despite having a stable job, she faces the heart-wrenching challenge of providing for her family.
“Groceries cost so much more these days,” she said. “My kids see the name-brand items at the store, but I have to tell them to choose something else because we can’t afford it.”
The surge in food prices has left their pantry nearly empty. “The food we receive from St. Mary’s Food Bank helps tremendously,” explained Elexis. “The girls love it when we get fruits and apple sauce.”
During a recent visit to St. Mary’s, her daughter, Esmeralda, spotted a box of pre-cut watermelons in their food basket. Our staff handed Esmeralda a fork and she happily sat on a chair, enjoying every bite. Seeing the pure joy of her daughter enjoying her favorite fruit reminded Elexis of the people who made this possible.
“Thank you to all the donors who give. Every little bit helps,” Elexis said with heartfelt gratitude. “If St. Mary’s weren’t here, I would definitely be eating less so I have more for my kids.”
