“I Never Thought I’d Need It” — Mary’s Story

At 83 years old, Mary still radiates warmth, humor, and independence. She lives alone with her little puppy — her constant companion — and does her best to make ends meet on a modest Social Security income.

“I never thought I’d need it,” Mary said through tears. “If I could afford it, I’d be the one giving instead of receiving.”

Mary has been visiting St. Mary’s Food Bank for about five years, ever since a neighbor told her about it. She’s thankful for the friendly faces and helping hands — and she always remembers to say thank you. In fact, not long ago, she gave a handwritten card to the staff to hang in their break room.

And despite the challenges, she keeps her spirits high. “I try to keep up with my bills,” she said. “I don’t want my kids to have to worry when I’m gone.”

For Mary, the food bank is about more than just groceries — it’s a caring community. “Everyone here is so kind,” she said. “They treat you like you matter.”

When asked what she’d say to the donors who make it all possible, her response was swift: “Thank you so much. I really, really appreciate everything you do. You have no idea how much it means.”

Thanks to your generosity, neighbors like Mary don’t have to face hunger — or hardship — alone.
