“Making Sure These Two Are Fed”: Marissa’s Story

Marissa, being a stay-at-home mom to her five-month-old son, Talon, and four-year-old lively daughter, Eleanor, is both a joy and a challenge. Her days are busy — bottles, playtime, nap schedules — and lately, filled with worry, too.

“My husband works full time as a pest control manager,” Marissa explained, holding baby Talon close as Eleanor giggled nearby. “But with just one income and bills being what they are, we needed a little help. We live in a low-income apartment, so we’re just trying to supplement where we can to make sure these two are fed.”

This was Marissa’s first visit to St. Mary’s Food Bank, but she already felt its impact. Her brother had gone there before and told her about his positive experience. “He said it was great,” she shared. “So, I thought, why not? Especially with how groceries are right now.”

Like many families, Marissa’s household has been severely affected by increasing food prices and the uncertainty surrounding food assistance programs. “We just started food stamps,” she said, “but with those possibly getting cut soon, we’re trying to be prepared. You never know.”

At the food bank, she’s thankful for every bag of fresh produce, canned goods, and household staples she can take home — especially the fruits Eleanor loves most. “She’s such an eater,” Marissa laughed. “She loves strawberries, blackberries, all that stuff.”

When asked what she would tell donors who make these moments possible, her answer came quickly: “Thank you for all your help and support. Many families need it — especially during these times.”

For Marissa, the visit wasn’t only about groceries — it was about peace of mind, knowing her children will have what they need.
