Two Paths, One Purpose: How St. Mary’s and Phoenix Rescue Mission Transform Lives Together

St. Mary’s Food Bank and Phoenix Rescue Mission are working together to ensure neighbors in crisis can access both nutritious food and critical support services. Mark, a Street Outreach Case Manager from Phoenix Rescue Mission, has been onsite at St. Mary’s for nearly two years. In that time, he’s met thousands of people and has helped place more than 100 of them in housing.

“People come in thinking they’re just getting food,” Mark said. “They don’t realize housing help, support services, employment support — even transportation for IDs and documents — are all here, too. Many have found jobs, reconnected with family, or finally taken the first step toward sobriety.”

Recently, Mark helped a woman who repeatedly cycled through shelters and living on the streets. Her eviction history limited housing options, but with a new job she could afford rent. Mark connected her with a property known for second chances, and with his help she was approved and moved in. This shows how employment and supportive housing partners can help someone begin to rebuild their life.

Below is a photo of Randy, an unhoused neighbor, who comes to St. Mary’s for food from time to time. When Randy last visited us, it was a cold morning and he was in a T-shirt. Mark asked if he needed a jacket and offered one from the back of his car. Randy hugged Mark in gratitude. This photo captures that touching moment.
